Addendum, amendment or renewal?
An addendum adds terms to a lease that stays in force — a pet clause, a parking space, a new occupant. An amendment changes an existing term, such as the rent or the move-out date. A renewal or extension continues the tenancy for a new term, sometimes on new terms. In practice the names are often used loosely; what matters is what the document says.
An addendum normally says which lease it belongs to — the address, the parties and the original date. Check that these match your lease.
What to check before you sign
Does it change anything besides what you discussed? Renewals in particular can bring a new rent, new fees or updated rules. Compare it with your current lease clause by clause.
Check the start date of the change and, for a renewal, the new end date and notice period. If a new roommate joins, check whether they take on the full rent together with you — many leases make every tenant responsible for all of it.
Who needs to sign
Usually everyone who signed the original lease, plus anyone new — and the landlord or property manager. Ask for a copy signed by all sides and keep it with your lease.
